내가 여태까지 보았던 내 분야 논문들 중 인용 수가 가장 높은 논문들..
이보다 인용 수 더 높은 논문들이 있을런지 모르겠지만... 여튼 이런 순위가 매겨지더라...
인용 횟수가 100만 넘어도 대단하다고 여겨지는데, 보라 저 엄청난 인용 횟수를....
(OALP과 B-tree 논문은 survey paper라 빛이 좀 바래지기는 하다.)

저들과 같은 논문을 쓰고 싶다.
한 분야를 새로이 열거나 또는 그 분야를 완전히 정리하여 끝내버릴 수 있는 그런 논문을..

PS. 역시 Jim Gray는 대가였다.
그간 DB계의 Turing Award Winner는 총 3명: Charles W. Bachman, E.F. Codd, Jim Gray.

데이터베이스 쪽 좋은 블로그들

흔히들 DB공부한다고 하면, Oracle, MySQL 다루는거 배우는 걸로 생각한다.
사실은 DB Internal이나, 또는 데이터의 관리/처리를 효율적으로 하기 위한 여러 기법들을 고안/개발하는 일인데 말이다.
실제 업계에서는 알고리즘 개발보다는 설치/응용 개발이 대부분이라 그렇겠지만 말이다.

어쨌든 DB쪽 특히 연구쪽 내용들과 산업계쪽 소식을 전하는 중요한 블로그들이 있어 갈무리 해본다.
RSS Feed를 받아서 읽어보면 유용할 듯.

DBMS2 blog: http://www.dbms2.com/ -Curt Monash라는 analyst가 운영하는 블로그. DB에 관한 산업계 전반의 최근 소식들을 소개하고, 그 이슈들을 중심으로 다루는 블로그, 매일매일 올라오는 feed들을 보면, 정말 열심히 소식들 갈무리 하여 올린다는 것을 알 수 있다.
The Database Column : http://databasecolumn.vertica.com/- Vertica라고 Column-based DBMS를 판매하는 회사에서 운영하는 블로그인데, 여기 참여하는 대학 교수들이 M. Stonebraker, D. DeWitt등 모두 학계에서도 쟁쟁한 사람들이다(E.F.Codd Award 수상자들). 자기네 회사와 연관되어 있어서 그런지 다루는 주제가 약간은 편향(?) 되어 있기도 하지만, 어쨌든 Column store DBMS나 OLAP, Cloud computing 관련하여 업자들이 보기에 좋은 내용들이 많다.
Google Research blog. http://googleresearch.blogspot.com/- Google의 researcher들이 자신이 개발하는 시스템이나, 논문을 요약해서 올리는 블로그, 업자들도 봐둬야할 내용들이 많다. 이런 회사에 가 있는 researcher들은 정말 학계에서도 많은 좋은 논문을 내고 들어간 사람들이 대부분이라(UW의 Alon Halevy같이 교수로 일하다가 가는 사람들도 많고...), 학술적인 가치가 상당한 내용들이다. 논문만큼 어렵게 쓰지는 않아서 보기도 수월.
Stanford InfoLab blog: http://infoblog.stanford.edu/ - DB 쪽 관련하여 언제나 UC Berkeley 등과 함께 최고의 랩으로 불리는 Infolab의 구성원들이 꾸미는 블로그. 아쉬운 점은 글이 아주 드문드문 올라온다는 것.
Data Beta: http://databeta.wordpress.com/ - UC Berkeley의 Hellerstein 교수의 기술 블로그. 이 분도 이 바닥에서 아주 유명한 학자이다.

LaTeX 원고에 삽입할 그림을 무료 SW로 EPS로 작성하는 방법.

공학 논문을 쓸 때는, 워드 프로세서로 작성하기에는 곤란한 수식이나 여러 심볼들의 표현이 자유로운, 그리고 BibTeX를 이용한 서지 정보 작성이 용이한 LaTeX를 주로 이용한다. 그리고, 그림은 보통 JPG가 아닌, EPS 포맷으로 삽입을 시킨다. JPG를 잘 쓰지 않는 이유는 파워포인트 등으로 작업한 그림 파일을 캡쳐에서 jpg로 변환 후 살펴보면, 글자 자체가 이지러져 번져 보인다는 점이다. 장수 제한 때문에 보다 작고 세밀한 폰트를 이용해서 그림을 그려봐도 jpg로 캡쳐를 하면 나중에 번진다는 것이다.(LaTeX 작업을 해본 사람들은 다 한번씩은 경험해 보았을 것이다.) 또한 이렇게 삽입한 jpg를 가지고 LaTeX를 ps 또는 pdf로 변환시켜봐도 pdf 변환시의 제한된 해상도에 따라 또다시 그림의 해상도가 떨어지는 문제가 있다. 그래서 사람들은 보통 이미지 파일을 EPS로 변환시켜 원고에 삽입한다.

EPS를 작성하기 위해서는 Adobe Acrobat (리더 말고) 이 있으면 문제가 없다. 그러나 Adobe Acrobat은 상용이다.
무료 도구로는 ppt2eps라는 툴이 있다. 하지만 이 툴의 문제는, 일단 비스타에서는 자주 에러를 발생시키고, 파워포인트 그림의 크기가 캔버스 만해지거나 그보다 커지면, 사이즈 문제로 인해 제대로 된 eps 파일을 출력하지 못한다는 점이다.

그러던 와중에 후배로부터 PDFCreator(http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/)라는 무료 PDF 작성 SW 를 알게 되었다. 보니, EPS 출력을 지원하고 있어 혹시나 싶어 설정을 해보았는데, 아주 제대로된 품질의 EPS를 얻게 되었다.
아래는 경험을 토대로 이의 사용법을 정리한 것이다.

*PDFCrator로 EPS 작성하기*

1) PDFCreator를 다운받아 설치한다.
2) 프린터 설정에서 PDFCreator 를 마우스 오른쪽 버튼 클릭하여 Properties를 선택
    (영문 윈도우라 한글로는 메뉴 명이 먼지 잘 ㅡ.ㅡ 아마도 속성?)
3) 나오는 메뉴 중 우측 하단의 Printing Preference 선택 -> 다음 Advanced(고급) 선택
4) 나오는 메뉴 중 PostScript Option -> PostScript Output Option을 Encapsulated PostScript(EPS)로 선택,
    True Type Font Download option-> Outline으로 선택
5) 파워포인트에서 그림 파일을 긁어서 CTRL+C로 카피
6) Accessaries(보조 프로그램)-> paint(그림판) 열어 초기 셋팅한다.
   a. 캔버스 크기를 작게 설정: 오른쪽 하단 캔버스 끝을 마우스로 drag해서 가장 작게 만든다.
   b. File -> Page setup을 눌러, Scalining을 원 그림 사이즈의 25~33%로 설정한다.
      (이걸 안하면 EPS 그림이 엄청 커지고, 나중에 LaTeX 태그로 resize도 안된다.
7) CTRL+V로 그림 PASTE
8) PDFCreator로 출력, 출력 시 파일 포맷은 eps로 설정한다.

이렇게 해서 작성된 EPS를 PDF로 뽑아보면 아주 유려한 Figure들을 볼 수가 있다. ^^

사실 요새 말도 안되는 국제 학술대회가 얼마나 많은가? 간단하게 국제논문 실적 챙기기 위해
IEEE, ACM Proceeding으로 출간된다는 말을 CFP에 걸고, 갑자기 만들어지는 첨보는 학회들과 저널들, 뭐 새 학회를 만든다는 것이 꼭 나쁘다고 말할 수는 없지만, 실적을 위해 만들어지는 듯한 느낌도 지울 수 없다.

2009년 현재 Information Systems& Software Engineering 분야 - SCI(E) List

느린 Thomson ISI에 매번 접근하는 것도 까다롭고, 아직도 optical과 wireless network을 정보공학 쪽으로 분류하는 Thomson의 categorial system도 못 미덥고 해서, 나름 관련 있다고 판단하는 journal들만 뽑아서 나열함. 또한,

- interdisciplinary journal 또한 가급적 배제함(예: bioinformatics 등)
- 컴퓨터 통신 분야 가급적 배제함.
- 학회지, Magazine 성격의 것은 그냥 둠.

How To Write Proofs

논문에서 정리와 증명을 넣어야 할 필요가 있어서 논리 전개를 해가던 중 어떤 증명법들이 또 있는지 인터넷에서 자료를 찾아보다가 발견하게 되었다. 꽤나 간결하게 정리되어 있는 듯 싶다. 좋다. 일전에 포스트해둔 용어 정리(http://bart7449.tistory.com/9 참조)와 같이 보아가면, 증명법에 대한 정리와 영어 예문으로는 적절할 듯 싶다.

Algorithm2e Too Many Brackets

어떠한 문제는 누군가가 이미 경험해보았던 문제였을 가능성이 높다...
algorithm 작성에 필요한 이놈의 package가 요놈의 학회 proceeding class하고 붙여놓으면, 요런 뻑이 나던데..
이미 여러 사람이 경험했나보다. 간단한 solution이 웹에 돌아다니고 있다.

As noted here, the algorithm2e LaTeX package conflicts with several others over the use of the algorithm identifier. A common indicator is something like this message:

프로그래밍 언어의 역사

R. Snodgrass 교수님 방문 앞에 붙여진 프로그래밍 언어의 역사에 대해 아주 흥미로운 가계도가 있길래 자세히 봤더니 여기에서 가져오셔서 출력하신 것 같다. ACM TODS(Transaction on Database Systems) Editor이시기도 한 이분은 이번 학기 지금 객체지향프로그래밍을 강의하고 계신다.
처음 들어본 언어도 꽤 되는구만.

Claremont Report

Claremont Report는 DB, CS 계의 석학들이 올해 5월에 Claremont Resort, Berkeley, CA에 모여서 앞으로의 비전에 대해서 토론한 내용을 간략하게 보고서 형태로 쓴 것이다. 이 모임은 5년에 한 번 열린다고 한다. 그러니 다음 report는 5년 뒤인 2013년에 나오겠지. 아주 rough하지만(논문 주제를 잡아 줄만큼 자세하지는 않지만), Big thinker들이 생각하는 앞으로의 추세와 연구 방향에 알아볼 수 있는 좋은 내용들이다.

참석한 사람들도 어마어마하다. Alon Halevy, Ioannidis, Stonebraker, An Hai Doan, Haas, Rakesh Agrawal 등등등..
